Launch of the Employment Appeals Tribunal Annual Report for 2007 - Aug '08

The Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) launched its Annual Report for 2007 on 17th July 2008. The report sets out many interesting statistics reflecting the work of the EAT, such as the following:

• A total of 3,173 cases were referred to the EAT in 2007 (a decrease on the 2006 figure which was 3,480);
• Of these, the most common referrals were:
  • Unfair Dismissals Acts - 36%;
  • Redundancy Payments Acts - 20%;
  • Organisation of Working Time Act - 12%;
• The average compensation awarded by the EAT was €7,279;
• 10% of awards made under the Unfair Dismissals Acts amounted to €20,000+;
• Re-instatement/Re-engagement was ordered in 5 Unfair Dismissal Cases.
