Activities of the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) - Oct '08

The Minister for Labour Affairs, Mr Billy Kelleher, TD, officially opened NERA's new regional office in Cork city on 16th September 2008. Other regional offices are at Shannon, Sligo and Dublin. NERA's head office is in Carlow.

At the opening, the Minister noted that NERA has been extremely active since its establishment with Inspectors carrying out 19,000 calls, visits and inspections to date in 2008. It carried out over 14,000 in 2007. The Minister highlighted the fact that more than €1.5 million in arrears due to employees had been recovered from employers to date in 2008. This is in addition to almost €2.5 million in 2007. The Minister further commented that NERA had completed its first three targeted inspection and awareness campaigns for 2008, which focused on the Security Industry, the National Minimum Wage and the Catering Sector.
